Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Durrell, a twentieth-century British author dignified by cultured readers, was a author of a Alexandria Quartet, a novel cycle named for a alluring and puzzling Egyptian city in that it was set. He also trafficked avidly and hence determined a repute as a shining transport writer. Evidence is done petrify in this anthology, in that excerpts from Durrell's book-length travelogues are collected with brief pieces published independently. His sold adore for a islands of a Mediterranean shines from a pages, and such passion impels transport novel to a fullest purpose: to stir a reader's imagination and longing. Durrell's elemental truth about transport is declared, and a tinge for this whole anthology is set, by a initial piece, "Landscape and Character," a 1960 letter creatively published in a New York Times Magazine--his view codified as "human beings are expressions of their landscape, though in sequence to hold a tip springs of a inhabitant hint we need a few moments of still with yourself." Quiet time with this book is a possess good reward. Brad Hooper

Review

"In poetry now ceremonious, now louche, it well captures a suggestion of that place and does so with a munificence of imagination singular in any writing, including 'fiction."'

5Compared to many transport writing, should be 6 stars

By David Chacko

The Lawrence Durrell Reader is a collection of his best transport writing. All a entries regard a Mediterranean World and quite a islands--Corfu, Rhodes, Cyprus and Sicily, with Provence and Delphi thrown in for continental balance. The collection celebrates what Durrell favourite to call "Spirit of Place." It might seem spasmodic antiquated as we pierce into a final decadance of condominium development. It might seem sentimental in an age where beachfront hotels supply "animation" for a patrons. But from a merriment of Prospero's Cell to a unhappiness of Bitter Lemons, Durrell will tell we all we need to know about a places he looked for in himself.

5Fine Travel Writing on Greece and Elsewhere

By Mike Gerrard

Ignore a disastrous review. Lawrence Durrell is zero like Gerald Durrell (who we also admire), and this is a book of transport essays and his transport books. It isn't a guidebook, so we can frequency protest about it not being a guidebook! That's like shopping pig and angry it isn't chicken.

I find Durrell's novella heavy-going, yet we do know many people suffer it, including my wife. But his transport essay is unequivocally accessible, beautifully lyrical, and unequivocally does plead that spirir of place. we write a lot about Greece myself, and so have examination a good series of books about Greece. Lawrence Durrell's are among a many beguiling that there are, quite a ones about Corfu and Rhodes. To get all together in one collection like this is a genuine treat.

1boring

By Eva Ava

I suspicion about pretension for my examination and could not consider anything else though "boring".
Barely could examination 1/3 of it. we unequivocally adore his younger brother's( Gerald Durrell) books that's since we bought this one to see what kind of a author Lowrence is.
If it's a manual it isn't most usefull since it was created prolonged time ago!
